Rio Ice Cream, Wellawatte

Walk down the high street in Jaffna and ask anyone for advice on the best place for an ice cream. You will hear just one name "Rio". Started off as a small ice cream parlour making home made ice creams for a city that truly lacked choice as far as desserts were concerned. Slowly but surely gaining momentum, Rio has become a household name for home made delicious ice creams in Jaffna.

The choice of flavours would baffle guests and the variety of sundaes were spectacular. The people from the North of the Island are known for their generosity and it truly shows by the large servings of flavours and sweeteners in their ice creams

Now in Colombo, Rio has extended its flavours to the West of the country and has truly begun to create an impact. What a location....... literally 20 meters from the sea. A great place for a relaxed evening with love from Jaffna

Environment

Very clean ice cream parlour. The building is brand new and very tastefully done. The tables are chairs are spotless and the staff very diligent. The location is absolutely key. A stone throw away from the Indian Ocean, what better way to relax than with a Rio Icy Choc in the hand, the sea breeze hitting your face and the calming sounds of the waves beating in. Spot on Rio.

One thing lacking though is a proper way to display their flavours. I am sure they are working on it, but displaying ice cream in tubs in large upright freezers does not really reflect the norm with an ice cream parlour

Service

Certainly no shortage of staff. The service is very prompt but the guys need to learn to smile a little :) Don't get me wrong, the service is spot on, but it's nice to have the guy taking your order just being a little enthusiastic and the cashier being a little more pleasant. Its an ice cream parlour guys, not a pharmacy......Go ahead, give us a smile

Food

As with anything tastes vary. There are plenty of flavours to choose from and not everyone will take a liking to everything. I must say the ice cream is richer and sweeter than any ice cream I have ever tasted, but then again, they are very generous people and it shows in their desserts. The Faluda is great and I just love the traditional Icy Choc.

Value For Money

No complaints here. Rs. 30 for an icy choc and Rs. 150 for a very large faluda. I think this is indicative of their average prices. Very reasonable and certainly value for money

Overall

I love the fact that Colombo has finally got another quality ice cream parlour. About time someone gave Carnival a run for their money. They have been monopolising the Ice Cream parlour space for years and never really tried to change anything for years. Rio, will certainly give them a good run. Overall, Kudos Rio, keep it up.. We love your ice creams

not the tastiest ice cream. But considering the price point, what they serve is way too good. The place could have been improved a bit. The fresh fruits doesn't taste good. So i recommend to stick to ice creams rather any other juices and shakes.

It taste likes flour when eating. I'm not actually satisfied with the ice cream being offered by the entity. This below the average level. But this is very affordable compared to other Ice Cream parlours prevailing in the City like #BasinRobbins #Ilgelato #Carnival #Roots etc..

Visited this place recently, Tried the Rio Special. Its sweeter and Tasty but was not much special. The place and settings are OK but little bit average looking.

Really good value for money! compared to the prices!

I asked Water from the waiter, and he said they don't offer water in the glasses and instead to buy a bottled one.

The place is located on Colombo Plan Road. The flavour of the ice-cream is pretty average. The cashier needs to understand Tamil because since it is a Tamil ice-cream parlour from Jaffna Peninsula. She needs to speak out clearly because the customer cannot understand on what she is saying and needs to take down the correctly. There is very little car-park slots. It is very warm inside the parlour and is very dirty. The furniture is very average looking and it seems like the management did not both look at the final impression of the place. The ice cream is very cheap and there is a long line from the entrance. There are marks on the walls. The management needs to install fans, if they are not interested installing air-conditions. There is no credit card mechanise and that could be a huge factor to the parlour because then the customers will have to pay by cash and some customers might simply drive off.
